Many decades in the past, it would’ve been strange to think of females leading the business world. Women were often restricted to motherhood and keeping the household in order as the men were expected to bring home the bacon. Times have changed greatly. Changed for the good! Women not only own 51% of all the wealth in the world, but women are opening businesses at a rapid speed compared to their male counterparts.
Unfortunately, there are many negative myths related to women in the business world that could prevent you from reaching your true potential. One of the greatest tools for excelling in an environment previously or even currently dominated by males is to dispel the rumors and prove that anyone can succeed.
• Motherhood Prevents Promotions
Motherhood changes you. So does Fatherhood. We live in a world now where companies are offering women AND men maternity leave. There are millions, yes I said millions, of women who not only work, but advance their careers while pregnant, and after they have their children. Motherhood doesn’t disqualify you from promotions, unless you want it to. Some mothers choose to pull back when their children are born. Nothing wrong with that! But where there is a will, there is a way, and if you want your babies and careers too, then there is a way to do it. (Trust me!)
• Females That Do Make It to the Top Are Single and Without Children
Females who are considered “at the top” have made decisions based on what was most important to them. Believe it or not, some women never want to have children or perhaps they can’t have children. Each person has their unique purpose for this world and if one woman’s purpose is to focus solely on her career, that’s should be viewed as totally acceptable. However, it does not mean a business woman with a family can’t or hasn’t made it to the “top.”
• Women Prefer a Flexible Working Arrangement
Male or female….who wouldn’t want to have a flexible schedule?! Personally, I like having control of my day. I don’t have kids now, but in the future it would be nice to schedule my child’s doctors appointment without having to fill out a time sheet. Yes, I do prefer to have a flexible working arrangement, but it’s not because I’m a woman.
• Females Lack Confidence
Oh please. Are there really people in the world who can’t point out at least ONE confident woman in their life? Women rule the world. Do we sometimes have insecurities, yes! But news flash, so do men! Confidence is a state of mind. I know many women who are confident…Actually they border on the line of egotistical they’re so freaking confident.
• Women Don’t Aspire to Become Leaders
Women are natural born leaders. You can’t remove it from us. We can’t cover it up, and we can’t run from it. We lead our charities, our churches; We lead our children and our spouses. We lead our businesses and our community. We don’t have to necessarily aspire to be a leader. We just naturally are. We lead and don’t even know it most of the time.
• Females Give up Before Making It to the Top
“The top” looks different to everyone. The world would have us believe that “the top” is running a billion dollar international business empire. For many women, “the top” includes countless mountains to climb, conquer and then move on to what’s next. There is no final destination. Our journeys are all unique. What is not unique, is our ability to “just give up.” Just because we don’t make it to the top of whatever goal you have in mind, does not mean we gave up. It could just mean, we moved on.
• Women Don’t Have Leadership Qualities
Empathy. Intuitivness. Honesty. Ability to delegate. Tough Minded.Creative. Inspirational……And I could go on and on. The first type of person who comes to mind when I think of these qualities are (drum role please!!)…a Mom.
• Females in Leadership Roles Do Not Help Other Women
99% of the time women are in Leadership roles because of the help from other women. Male or female, the first trait of any good leader is collaboration. The success of those you lead is due to the “leader” realizing they don’t know it all. The most impactful changes in our history are because women came to together, they worked with each other, and they lifted each other up.
